Will Packer’s last name seems somewhat apropos, considering it’s what he does to movie theaters. After scoring monumental coups with Ride Along, which boasts the biggest January opening ever, and the edgy romantic comedy About Last Night, which debuted at No. 2 Valentine’s Day weekend, his team is now gearing up for the highly anticipated June release of Think Like a Man Too.
And to add to an already amazing year, Packer will team up with The Best Man Holiday director Malcolm D. Lee for his next project under the newly formed Universal Pictures/ Will Packer Productions banner. But the man with the million-dollar touch hasn’t always been this captivating.
“My older movies are staples in any American bootleg collection,” jokes the producer who is responsible for projects such as Trois, Motives and The Gospel. “But each step of the way I’ve been learning and growing.”
The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) alum’s entry into the industry is evidence of divine work. While at school on an electrical engineering scholarship, all of the up-and-coming entrepreneur’s actions spoke to his purpose. He was working for hours on student government campaigns at FAMU, playing sports and winning debate competitions.
